Intermittent scraping noise

Brethren, your thoughts please on an intermittent scraping noise from the rear wheel. It comes and goes as it pleases with no control from change of speed, braking or coasting (no drive).

I have considered warped dust shield, stones in discs pads, loose material around shoes but nothing found. No score or witness marks to show contact. Discs and calipers have been off twice and still nothing evident.

One item of note is that a righthand bend may, and it is may, initiate the noise with a lefthand helping to clear it.

Reducing speed may also factor with it clearing once below 20 mph.

Could it be a wheel bearing? I am lost for ideas.

My exhaust was a little loose and misaligned and it would sometines touch something that gave a scraping noise. Perhaps worth wiggling it around and seeing if it can touch anything.

Firstly see if anything is conctacting the brake disc by pulling up after a drive.... if your finger melts on the disc.... you have issues

Exhaust may be a good shout. I had a similar clearance issue and used engineering paint to see what was touching....
Tippex was left on the exhaust at the over axle bend where it had been touching other parts.

I had a similar noise which turned out to be the diff output shaft metal cups that hide the seals on the diff. It would occasionally catch and spin with the shaft.

Yep nice easy one. Diff output bearing dust excluder. Readily available Toyota MA61 part. Driveshaft needs to be removed in order to remove output shaft. Mine is now nice and quiet, drove me crazy for years.

Thanks for all your pointers. I will check exhaust and hot brakes. I have new diff covers since the replacement of the diff and seals the other year. I will check them though JIC.

We nearly had a winner ! Diff seal cap was loose on left side dropped a blob of sticky stuff on to hold it but no joy - came back in the last 200 yds after a test run. Will check the sticky and try again to see if more stick is required.
