Dim-dip relays - someone check please ?

For all those wiring gremlins we love, this is the place to discuss them.

Dim-dip relays - someone check please ?

Post by amarshall »

Could someone who still has a working dim-dip on their car (if there is anyone) please check the 3 relays in the passenger footwell and tell me what type they are (particularly the bottom one) ? The parts manual lists them as all the same type, but the descriptions don't match that.

I'm wondering if this is the reason that I've blown a second dim-dip unit. I now have an Aston-Martin unit to drop in instead, but don't want to risk it until I'm pretty sure I won't blow that one too.

OTOH - for those who don't like the dim-dip operation, my pods no longer come up when sidelights are switched on

Angus, just back from a trip into the Lotus position in my garage.
All three relays (S,T,U I think) are the same, and I think they must be original since I have never been in there before.
They are rated 40A and are switch over.
Closest image I could find is this:

Thanks Alan.

That's interesting - if they are all changeover, then the parts manual may be wrong. It seems to list them all as make/break type!

Definitely 87/87a terminals ?

I'm pretty sure that at least two of mine are make/break - that might explain why there's some odd behaviour on my car.

I had them all out and the diagram on the side of each relay seemed to be as the illustration above.
Haven't checked the wiring diagram though.

Whale Oil Beef....

The service notes confirm your findings Alan - and throw up a few other surprises re relay types.

Sometime, I must go through them and compile a proper list since the parts manual clearly has some confusion in it,

Dim-dip unit is fine - one of the relays had excessive carbonisation on the contacts. Cleaned up and all working again.
