Miles per Gallon

Post by Tanz »

I haven't checked the miles per gallon for a few years but just did a check from fill to fill.
285.6 Miles, 47.08 Litres = 10.36 gallons. 27.6 Miles per Gallon.
That was a mix of local driving and a run. Quite happy with that for an engine just coming up to 125,000 miles.
I'm obviously not driving it hard enough!! :D
Cheers, Phil

~240 miles on the trip meter when the fuel light comes on (US mile is 5,280 feet), usually calculates out to about 20 MPGs (US gallons which are different for certain US128oz vs 160oz UK/Gal -so I don't go as far per gallon by a significant percentage) I also romp on the gas frequently pulling 5-6.5k RPMs when warmed up from the frequent drags strips here, er traffic lights. I usually stay in and around town.
I'll get a better long distance cruise assessment tomorrow, heading to a car show 2 hours away on back-road highways which limit around 55-60mph.

So, I'm one of those people who keep a spreadsheet for fuel fill ups on all my cars ....
The Excel stats in the 3.5 years of ownership over 7,000 miles are as follows:

Average MPG - 26.1 8)
Best - 32.02 - Drive down to Le Mans :D
Worst - 19.05 - Not long after I had the car - had ignition and carb issues back then. :(
Latest fill up - 27.38

As I have been working on the car and using it more regularly (but still not that regularly as I've only done 7,000 miles in the time I've had the car) the MPG has improved significantly.

My old car was around 28 MPG average (best was 33), however that had a flowed head and I don't think it was running as rich as my current car.

This thread forced the obligatory check and I got a surprise.

First check against 30 litres resulted in 180 miles ish, so 27 mpg.

Second check against 45 litres currently on 234 miles with more to come :)

FWIW, did a car show last week, 261 miles round trip from the gas station to the venue and back to refill. Almost exclusively highway with maybe 8 miles in total of local roads, but still efficient roads. Burned 10.4 US Gals resulting in 25 mpg (US Gallon).
10.4 US = 8.66 UK gals.
That Converts to 30.1 mpg UK equivalent. Pretty happy with that number.
The real kicker is I inadvertently put Regular non high octane fuel in that morning. I guess I needed more octane myself (e.g. coffee).
Here we have 87/90/93 octane rating options which are actually ??/95/98 octane ratings in the EU since it's calculated differently so our 87 is maybe a 92 equivalent over there?

FWIW, most people over here use the 87 unless their care 'requires' premium fuel -which means the 93. Most of the fuel here also has 10% ethanol content. I suspect the 90 Octane fuel option is rarely used by anyone. We're either cheap or lavish!!!!

Had mine about 7 years and have only checked it about twice a year on the longer holiday trips. Average has been about 28 mpg. Last year I cleaned the Jets and re-tuned and on the following holiday I managed 29 mpg.

I quite sure it's possible to get it down to 20 if you try hard enough! :D

I'm sure you can can go MUCH lower than that on a track day!

My 1040 cc Clan with twin 40 DHLA's will do 45 -50 mpg on a run to a track day venue and 7 mpg on tight twisty tracks (lots of gear changes)!
