hi again guys, can anyone tell me if my 1984 excel will be tested on emissions when i take her for an MOT. .i have been looking through some of the forum links looking at what different people have said about fuel. i was told the car originally run on leaded petrol and when i fill her up i need to add lead additive . if so can anyone recommend what to buy or give me any suggestions on what the best fuel is to buy ?.
oh nearly forgot , thanks for all your kind welcomes.
The 9xx series of engines were designed to run on unleaded and all do, though you need to adjust the timing if you run on low octane "normal" unleaded..
hi thanks for the link. im NOT clued up in anyway shape or form. its nice to know that there are other owners out there willing to help
just cant wait to get her on the road and have some fun.mid life crissis in progress. like a kid with a new raleigh chopper .
cheers again, alistair.
Worth checking that the MoT station applies the correct year-of-manufacture test for your vehicle. I've had fun and games recently with this, as my 1992-build car has its first date of registration in 1995 (when it was "imported" onto the mainland from Northern Ireland where they had/have a different registration system). A lazy technician, ignoring the registration plate, can therefore apply the more stringent later emissions tests for 1995, which would probably fail on most Excels.
I had to show my original handbook, letter re VIN numbers from the factory and V5 certificate to persuade them that it was a '92 model.
PS run your Excel on Shell V-Power unleaded, nothing else.

you qualify for higher emissions my 85my flew through the mot including the emissions even though they didnt have the car listed i always run on v power though have on occasion run shell normal as not all shell stations carry v power to be honest didnt really notice a difference, angus is spot on with the 9xx engines being designed for unleaded ie the esprit in the us and esprit/excel in australia were unleaded wa a requirement for new cars from the early 80's
