Clear plastic drain tubes?

Post by Red Excel »

Hi, I have just done the head gasket on my excel and am nearing completion. (basically just carbs and manifold to remount) When it was apart I noticed at the back of the engine two tubes coming from down beside the gearbox up to above the bellhousing. They are about 3/4" diameter clear plastic tubes a bit yellowish with time and age. They look like the sort of thing that goes down the window frames of cars with fitted sun roofs. I am assuming that they are drain tubes as they seem to want to go to about the position of the drip tray at the back of the bonnet on the bulkhead. However there are no connections at the bottom of the drip trays to connect to. Is this because I am totally wrong and they do something else instead or if I am right, what is missing from my car to connect to. I have looked through the exploded parts online manual and can't find any reference to them unless someone can tell me what page there on? Thanks in advance. regards Tony.

Could be the tube which was originally connected to the purge pump? Connection at the bottom rear of the air box and to pump module mounted on the inner wing. Mine weren't connected nad just hung down.

They do sound like the drain tubes for the heater air intake and aircon condenser. I don't recall there being anything for them to connect to and the "Heater Ducting" page just shows a hole for one of them without the tube being present.

the heater drain tubes just push into holes at the bottom of the plenum or into the side depending on the year

There should be a grommet in each hole in the plenum.
