Fan problem

It might be a problem with the check-strap/spring; that's the only "complicated" bit at the hinge end. Have you got a parts diagram to look at the arrangement of the assembly?

Hi Pete,
Many thanks it was the door card now OK.
Having problems now no rad fans working fuses ,relays in place next to fuse box fan fail light on all the time ,but i need to use the car in 8.00 in morning to get to Hospital appiontment,can i over ride anything to make the fan run on all the time so i can use the car any ideas welcome

If you have aircon - switching that on activates the fans. If not, shorting the otter switch connections would probably do it.

When my fans failed it turned out to be a fuse but not the main 2 fuses slots 22 and 23. It was a 2A fuse slot 18 radiator control fuse. Have you checked this one?

Yes i checked all 3 fuses all OK, i do not have a spare relay, Hodders said short otter connectors ? to each other ? Any ideas ?
Any other idea how to bypass to get a fan running so i can use my car tomorrow morning without cooking my engine?Cheers Rog

If you have shorted the otter switch and your fuses are ok it only leaves the relay or the fan motors themselves. It is unlikely that both motors are knackered at the same time so relay is number one suspect. Have you pulled the relay to check its visual condition - apparently they are prone to fill with water if you have a leak. I have never changed mine but you have to be carefull which you buy - needs to be a double pole.

Hi,
Bypassed the otter switch temp to get fans running ,i have ordered a replacement thermo unit kit & not use otter not working.
Relay is OK dry no water leak !!!
Are they Ford relays ?

Don't think anyone on here has said they are Ford relays but someone recomended these people

The relays are standard ISO relays as used by most motor manufacturers through the 80s and 90s at least.

If replacing the fan relay be careful to get a double pole single throw - most factors will simple sell you a changeover relay which is intended for headlamps (switching from dipped to main beam). Check the markings on the base of the relay to be sure they match - or search this forum for more info. I posted some hints about alternatives a while ago.

P.S. - Roger, there used to be a Lucas agent in Hull, somewhere near the hospital, who had a full range of relays available off the shelf. Might be worth a look ?

I will have a look i think they are still there near Hull Royal Infirmary Anlaby Road for spares.
I have had replacements fitted by auto spark & a new thermo unit fitted a Kenlowe Fans now working OK.
My new high torque starter arrived today & we are going to fit it Friday.
