Lotus Eclat Rear Seat Belts

Post by Bavarian Éclat »

Hello again :)

I am currently starting to make a list of parts I have to order next year for my Eclat.
One point are the seat belts for the rear seats.
Currently there are none. :)
My kids love the taste of danger when sitting in the back without seat belts, but I got cold shivers even if we just drove half a mile

Can anyone of you tell me (or best: show me some pictures) of how the seat belts in the rear are attached?
Did anyone of you even retrofit the belts recently?
Where are the belts attached on the chassis?

All the Best
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

SJ Sportscars list the rear seatbelt items here: https://www.sjsportscars.com/parts-and- ... rchresults

The steel reinforcement angle plates are fitted to the underside of the body.

IIRC my S2.2 is fitted with lap belts, but I noticed SJS list MOUNTING PLATE for REAR SEAT BELT, (Upper for S2 only) and R Dent, https://rdent.com/manuals/index.html ....Body/Interior/Seatbelts, diagram shows a diagonal , over the shoulder 2 point belt, so it should be possible to fit a modern 3 point belt.

Regards, Graham

I am not sure of the body on the eclat but this is for an excel

These are the 3 items needed to mount a rear reel at the upper bulkhead position

Image

The circular load spreader mounts from the boot into the inner wing bracket shown

Image

The reel sits inside the box mount and bolts through into the second hole on the inner wing bracket

That's not a crack either !!

I'm sure the design concepts of the attachment brackets are consistent from the earliest Elite right through to the last Excel, but there are many subtle tub changes, that means the parts Stu put in pictures likely change slightly between models.
I know for a fact that the orange lap belt items in Stu's pictures are very slightly different between a 74 Elite and a 92 Excel. IIRC, the length changed slightly and the angles on the end plate are different.
Expect a bit of cutting and shutting of any bracket plates, unless you know they came off the same model year as yours.
What goes together.... Must come apart.

Many thanks for your help.

I saw some of the parts at SJ as well.

If I understand you right, I need to add the parts from the "underside" of the car and the belts are then fixed through the body?

Sorry if I am a little bit on the slow side. My english is ok, but I miss some of the phrases for this topic.

They needed adjustment for my 86my excel. Not sure if it's differences in years or shell to shell.

Upper bracket:
One part in the trunk (boot)
One part in the wheel well
One part in the cabin

Lower bracket:
Mounted outside underneath the rear seat moulding with 2 bolts passing inside
One retains the cable clip
One retains the belt strap

Hi, I'm trying to get the images to work, but you're correct. The metal angled "tray" sits OUTSIDE the car (where it can rust nicely) and then the lower seat belt mount and the seatbelt clip mount INSIDE the body (obviously!), through the body of the car and are bolted into the welded-on nuts on the tray, with the body of the car sandwiched in-between. I blocked mine off with little white 3D printed bungs, but you can see where the bolt would go through when installing.

Bear in mind, this is on an EXCEL, so if someone gives you more accurate information relating to your own car, believe them!

Thank you Dan.

I came back to this matter again this weekend.
My first tries were quite sad, since I was not able to remive the rear seats
But I will use your pictures as guide, to hopefully find out more.
