For Ray-s.
If you jack up the rear you will see a gap between the fibreglass body and top of spring carrier.
There should be a thin rubber pad there. If not put a hard rubber 3 to 4mm packer in, a contact adhesive can help to avoid future packer loss, and lower the car.

Re: Banging/slapping noise at back
Could it be the rear body to chassis bolts?
I had a similar noise a couple of years ago, and tried everything - cleared out the boot, checked exhaust clearances etc.
There are two designs for these bolts. Earlier (prior VIN 89 D 2457 - see parts manual, 10.03A, for full details as the numbering scheme looks a bit odd to me) bolts went horizontally; later designs vertically.
Once I tighten them up it removed the 'bump' noise when going over undulations. My car had the vertical bolts and this required removal of the fuel tank to get a socket onto the bolts. I understand some people have managed to do this with the fuel tank still in the car, but I couldn't get to the bolts without full removal of the tank.
There is a more detailed thread on this topic somewhere on this site.

Could it not be that if the pad mentioned falls out/wears away then the symptom maybe bump noise cured by tightening up the slack. Howevere the buffer pad is now not doing its job!

Maybe check your rear bumper rivets along the bottom edge. Quite a few of mine had parted and the bumper lower edge flapped around a bit at speed.

Have you checked the diff carrier bracket bushes? They were split on my car when I removed the diff. If they are really bad I can imagine you getting a clunk.
