912 HC Engine

Post by v8 fou »

I am fitting a Lexus V8 to my Excel, so I have the removed engine for sale.
Now, I think it is a bit of a crossover / hybrid. Numbers show it to be late design, but it has the early carbs and distributor.
It has the HC head and cam boxes, but using a borescope it looks like steel liners.
So, over to you. Vin is 89D 12523

Having the steel liners I would think of as a bonus! Good leakdown figures and oil pressure.

So for the whole thing with all ancillaries includes starter, bell housing and NOS turbo solid flywheel (it has the flexplate type fitted) I reckon £1500 but open to negotiation
LB charge anout £1500 for a bare engine according to the website.
Could be split if the bare engine goes first.

Also a slightly smeggy radiator, no leaks, £40

Good eve v8 fou

I see you have a question mark over identification of your engine?. ive had a search through forum and managed to find a good link for you under engine numbers this has some very helpful links to explain spec of engine spec 9 lc spec 10 hc etc. Hope this helps.
As your Excel stands out due to the lovely additions i found it also on another thread post subject (Full renovated excel for sale no idea of price). This was back in 2012 ad says 108,000 miles and states LC engine fitted . So perhaps that might help in the identification of the engine your trying to sell.
Perhaps some other members could advise to id for you
I believe your engine number says DZ912 87 08 24214 Just looking through thread links shows DZ as spec 9 LC ? This would explain early carbs and distributor along with the steel liners fitted to the lower 160bhp engine been the 912 came with the newer cam boxes for both spec 9 and 10 tune.

Hope information helps

kind regards

Thank you. Typical blurred change points by Lotus!
The miles thing is a bit confusing as the records seem to be all over the place. But having looked down the bores with a 'scope there are still hone marks on the liners - that makes them steel, for sure. Very good oil pressure too and good leakdown figures. It has the correct casting numbers for the head and block but I guess the LC cams. All very confusing.

Anyway, guess someone should make me a (sensible) offer before it goes on the evilBay.

ps. V8 now running!

Also have all ancilliaries and a 2 cap expansion tank.

What are the "correct casting numbers" then? And is the same engine serial number stamped on the head as well (the "24214" bit)?

Good eve v8 fou

So can you post up engine numbers so we can help with identification for you .
1, So at moment it looks like we have a 912 engine possible 60,000 mile HC? but perhaps 108,000 lc as advertised when last sold ?
2, Engine number DZ912 87 08 24214 LOTUS IDENTIFICATION for this is a spec 9 build 160 bhp.
3, Manual cam belt adjustment fitted this was fitted to spec 9 160bhp spec 9LC also 180bhp HC. spec 10
4, Round tooth belt and pulleys fitted this was fitted to spec 9 160bhp LC also 180bhp HC.
5, Not fitted with tri jet carbs as was fitted to the HC engine. Type 10
6, Fitted with type 43 distributer as for the 160 bhp Type 9 the 180 bhp had type 45 fitted.
7, Steel liners as fitted type 9 160bhp.
8, LC cams fitted?
9, HC head and cam boxes? these were a upgrade from type 9 160bhp and also type 10 180bhp.
So looking at it not so confusing i believe it is one of the first 912 engines been of 160bhp as advertised the last time it sold. And shows to be the spec of a type 9 160bhp and engine number to show the spec as.

Whats your thoughts?
