Forgive me, but am I the only one viewing this thread with amazement?
A member makes the kind offer of some part-worn tyres free of charge. He is panicked by prophets of doom into disposing of them because of what 'might' happen - when I'm sure members on here who run their cars on a budget would have gladly had them.
Yes, those who are well off and routinely spare no expense on their Excels will shod them with nothing but the newest and most risk-free rubber. That is their prerogative, but others on lesser budgets don't have that luxury. Surely it is not for the former to dictate to the latter what they should or shouldn't do?
Part-worn, secondhand tyres are currently a massive market. I run several cars, and have bought used tyres on several occasions for them without problem. It wouldn't surprise me if some of the guys at tips sell dumped tyres to secondhand sellers, or sell them themselves on eBay. Yes, there is risk with secondhand tyres, but there is with most things in life. Are used mechanical parts no longer going to be offered on the forum due to the risk of using them compared to new ones?
I'm still using the tyres that were on my Excel when I bought it several years ago. It came with an extra set of 'winter tyres'. They probably haven't been on the car for 5/6 years, but the tread is good. I've never examined them in detail, but subject to a general look-over I'd consider using them when my current tyres wear out.
Surely we're supposed to be drivers of iconic classic sports cars - risk-takers and pushers of the envelope? Or are members going to cease using their Excels, Elites and Eclats because they don't have airbags? I know many of us on here (myself included) are getting on a bit - but I'd thought the kind of cars we drive set us apart from the risk-averse and 'safety is everything' typical pensioner!!
