2 Goodyear Eagle ZR 50's 215/50 ZR 15 offered for FREE

Post by swiftcruiser »

I have two Goodyear Eagle ZR 50’s 215/50 ZR 15 each with 6 mm of tread that I have taken off the Lotus
The car was lasted used on the road in 2002 the tyres being on the car during its time off the road until I replaced them with Kumho’s.
The Kumho’s, being of different size makes the Goodyear’s surplus to requirements.

Tyre data: Tyre 1 CO7l 2JY 246 (Manufactured 24th week 1996)
Tyre 2 E12R 2jA2 019 (Manufactured 1st week 1999)

These tyres are FREE to whoever may have a need, just pm me, I am just north east of Winchester, Hampshire and we can arrange a convenient time for collection
Robert

i would not put tyres that old on my car couple of years ago mgb owner died when an old but ok looking tyre blew out. tyres are the things that keep the car on the road. swift cruiser please take them to the dump, they could cause injury to the receiver followed by great grief to you.

I guess that's why they are free, can be used as a "spare" in the boot or for storing the car on during resto etc.
I REALISED YOU CANT LIVE WITHOUT A LOTUS!!! Until now

I'm with Alan on this.
My spare was a Goodyear that was many years old (I've had the car 13 years and it was there when I bought it). I took it to the dump rather than let anyone risk using it, even though it had a lot of tread left.

Hate to knock a kind offer Swifty, but I am with Alan on this. Even though a premium brand, the rubber looks polished and age hardened from the photos. Here is a link to the fatal Devon coach crash on similar aged tyres http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-23320526.
Nothing is fool proof. Fools are clever!

Hi Robert
if we were closer then we would have had them (Norfolk) - Ed is at university and can not really afford to replace tyres unless he actual has too, these are probably much better and safer than what is on the car at the moment (as his dad I have noticed the sides getting extremely bald but still legal / no idea how old they are) admittedly if old they can get a bit hard and not worth risking but I have seen tyres this old be perfectly good! all depends on how they were stored and there general life
My Mum car is a 2000 and she has done 16000 miles in the car from new - the back tyres are original factory have full tread on them but the side walls have started to crack from age and I am guessing that they are overdue replacing - she will not change them and realisticly she is not going to drive over 30 mph ,so if there was an accident I doubt sticky new tyres will make any difference!
personally I don't empty the fridge just because the dates tell me to!

Appreciate your comments, my original thinking was that tyres might have been of use as spares, because of age and these tyres would be fitted onto relatively high performance cars then would have advocated them NOT to be fitted for road use.
For your sons car have a look at Toyo 205/50 R 15 they have had good feed back on this site and are relatively inexpensive (appreciate that all costs are relative to what one can afford or wants to spend)
Regards
Robert

mathat, does the car have an mot, those tyres you describe would fail, its not just your family that is at risk but other road users, the cost of tyres is small compared to the grief that dangerous tyres can cause you and others. as someone's dad don't you care?.

the car is mot'ed and the tyres are legal - the cracking has been mentioned to the MOT people each year and they just note it as a advisory (last 3 years), and in the end it's not my choice as it not my car!
I believe that most crashes are usually caused by the driver making mistakes and not the tyres failing to stop - hence I have always bought reasonably / very cheap tyres for my cars where as most people seem to only buy top brand tyres - yes it's nice to have good tyres but where do you draw the limits?

my limit is that my cars will be as safe as i can make them, that is as safe as when they left the factory, no compromises, tyres are the things that keep them on the road and those few square inches of rubber are all that stand between between being safe or sorry.

Forgive me, but am I the only one viewing this thread with amazement?

A member makes the kind offer of some part-worn tyres free of charge. He is panicked by prophets of doom into disposing of them because of what 'might' happen - when I'm sure members on here who run their cars on a budget would have gladly had them.

Yes, those who are well off and routinely spare no expense on their Excels will shod them with nothing but the newest and most risk-free rubber. That is their prerogative, but others on lesser budgets don't have that luxury. Surely it is not for the former to dictate to the latter what they should or shouldn't do?

Part-worn, secondhand tyres are currently a massive market. I run several cars, and have bought used tyres on several occasions for them without problem. It wouldn't surprise me if some of the guys at tips sell dumped tyres to secondhand sellers, or sell them themselves on eBay. Yes, there is risk with secondhand tyres, but there is with most things in life. Are used mechanical parts no longer going to be offered on the forum due to the risk of using them compared to new ones?

I'm still using the tyres that were on my Excel when I bought it several years ago. It came with an extra set of 'winter tyres'. They probably haven't been on the car for 5/6 years, but the tread is good. I've never examined them in detail, but subject to a general look-over I'd consider using them when my current tyres wear out.

Surely we're supposed to be drivers of iconic classic sports cars - risk-takers and pushers of the envelope? Or are members going to cease using their Excels, Elites and Eclats because they don't have airbags? I know many of us on here (myself included) are getting on a bit - but I'd thought the kind of cars we drive set us apart from the risk-averse and 'safety is everything' typical pensioner!! :D :D

Yes

Per ROSPA
Tyres that have been in storage should not be placed into use if they are over 6 years old, from their date of manufacture. When a tyre has been in use, the effects of ageing are lessened to a degree, but such tyres should be replaced after 10 years.

Part worn tyre from 1996 Free
Toyo Proxies T1-R £47.99 (TyreLeader)
Bridgestone RE002 Potenza Adrenalin £69.50 (Tyreshopper)
Your safety Priceless

Then I stand corrected. If the advice comes from a nannying state organisation it must be right

Worth a read : https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=EEw ... ge&f=false

Storage & age seem to have a significant effect on tyre performance.
