"Foam" in B pillar air outlet

In the B-pillar air outlet there is a "Foamlooking" material when our cars left the factory

At My -88 SE the "Foam" is now turning into some kind of dry powder :(
Is there a need to have this "Foam" in place for any reason other then maybe to keep flies and such animals out of the car

If needed, It looks very similar to what is used at homespeakers. :!:
Is it OK to use such material as replacement? :?:

Mine began to disintegrate a while back. I simply removed it. I was thinking of finding some replacement foam but found no issues without it, so didn't bother!

Fish tank filter material might be more suited to the application, since it's somewhat exposed to elements

Thanks, DC, for that link. I ordered up a sheet of that and it looks okay. Ideally, it could be a fraction thicker but it's perfectly satisfactory and is a lot better than the stuff I took out!

20mm also available or do you think that is too thick. If you did it again would you use 12mm or 20mm?

You may find that you need to double-up, as it's really of a block than a sheet that was originally used.

So go with the 20mm thick stuff then?

Yep, I think I purchased 100mm square pond filters and once the centre hole was deducted it worked out about the right thickness so 20mm may be close enough.
