Random question of the day

Is the quarter light window the same size on all years of the excel. I.e. mine is an 87 with the wing mirror in the glass and the later ones have door mounted mirrors.
Is the glass the same size, just earlier years have the mirror mounting holes in them?

:?:

Second question -
Does anybody sell clear sd1 rear lights?

Next question as I didn't pull these out...are they a one piece unit or can be split at the lens to separate. If this is possible, I may get a clear lens made up. Might turn out to be too much of a headache.

The lenses are pretty solidly bonded onto the back shells.

Bugger - thought that might be the case. Just thinking the standard light may detract from the paint job....I could be wrong and they may be fit in we'll but I really wanted just 3 colours, yellow, black and red.

Was there a US version of the SD1 that had plain red rear lights? There probably wasn't but I know with some european cars of the same era, the US versions had to have plain red rear lamps.

Ignore that last post, it was a rubbish suggestion! It looks like the US SD1 had the same lights as the European one

I may just buy some second hand ones, remove the lenses and get a front face machined in perspex unless anyone has any other suggestions.

First answer at top of post still remains unanswered...anybody care to fill in the knowledge gap?

Yes, both bits of glass fill the same space. I got a frame with a holeless glass and swapped the glass for a holy one .amen.
I hope you have patience tho, cutting out the glass from the frame is a pain.

Cheers for that. The frame is 9 parts rust and 1 part paint, probably will just fall apart.
I am thinking of mounting carbon fibre mirrors on the door. Motorsport spec ones are less than 100 quid a pair or even more accessible are motorcycle ones. Smaller and lighter.

The rear lights are annoying me now....
Have been thinking of making a replacement light out acrylic or moulding a set of Nissan skyline afterburners into fibreglass pod mounted onto the sd1 backs but don't think it will necessarily compliment the arse end shape or the height where they are mounted.

I think the ideal would be to get the sd1 shape lens in a better colour of either lightly smoked or clear, which would be more in keeping with the colour scheme of mine.

Here's one I made earlier with raised rear afterburner lights ...not a very well integrated design though ..

You could just fit a flat piece of perspex in the bumper recess that goes completely over the existing lights and number plate, that would tidy everything up.
