My heater fans do not work and the only thing they blow is the fuse when switching on, Can anyone tell me where they are located, previous owner told me they just might need greasing and they could be
seized 1985 Excel

its the early model, I removed the glove box and the panel under the dash on the passenger side today and had a look around.
there is a big round grey box which holds the fan unit I pulled out four or five leaves, the previous owner told me it blows a fuse but it didnt feel like it was seized. I cant hook up the electric yet because the engine is out and the fuel pump is hooked up. maybe its the switch or just the few leaves.

the early models have two heater fan motors, one on either side of the heater unit which sits on top of the transmission tunnel. they are hell to remove or even to inspect especially the right hand one. basically it is a dash off and then some job. try to establish which one is causing the problem and hope that it is not the right one. good luck

Please dont tell me that there is two......... I almost broke my back removing the left side one and no way could i get one of the bolts back in, I also had to cut the wires to remove it as wire plug would not pull out of the pins. I added a good 20 cm of wire to make it easier to put back in. It was full of leaves removed them then wd40 on the shaft and it now spins freely, tested the new wiring and it works on the 2 speeds. Cant test it yet with the car switches yet becouse the engine is out on a rebuild and the battery is disconnected

Also took out the broken radio which i had to destroy to get it out, the illumination lights in the center console do not work And I read somewhere that it might be the rheostat. So I will work on them next week as I wait for the head, getting close now though Im hoping to drive it out of the garage by early feb im itching to drive it.

terry, i have helped my son to do this, you will have to check that the right one is working because the heater will not work on one fan, it is possible to get the complete unit ( both fans and plenum box) out without removing the pedal box, or leave the unit in place take the pedal box out then remove the right fan, this is the professional way as reccommended by lotus bits. both are very difficult and sometimes need two people. i hope my advice is too late and the job is behind you.
