Can someone recommend me a battery

Post by Simpatico »

....for a 1982 Elite (boot mounted)?

Now whatever lived in there must have been tiny and shaped like a letterbox if the standard battery clamps are to work.......on my previous Elite I ordered one that was listed as correct and it still didn't fit QUITE right, cue lots of tie wraps which would probably fail an MOT and looked shit....sorry Guy

I had though about snipping off the threaded rods and moulding in a custom battery tray, but I would like it to be fairly original

.............altho our '81 S2.2 Elite isnt on the road yet, had the same problem trying to find a good battery that fits. bought one listed at Halfords for the S2.2 Elite - it fits but its simply not man enough. it does the job starting the car when im moving it about to do repairs etc and is the right size but daily driving starting would be useless. i would also be interested to know on this one too please guys. the heavy duty Calcium? battery i got from Halfords, different size//type of course for our Excel , on the other hand is a brilliant battery. regards all. DC.
p.s drop by in your Elite S2.2 sometime please !!! :D

Very funny, any more of that and it will be assault and battery

The existing item seems more sized for a motorbike than a car; trouble with fitting a new larger item is that it would no longer sit in the existing recess and would thus stand proud, making 1. the existing cover/toolbox useless and 2. robbing limited boot space

This is what i use in the Excel. Expensive but a much better power to weight ratio AND will last 3 times longer than anything you could buy from Halfords

Odyssey PC925 lightweight dry cell battery

Fits in the tray with room to spare...check out the dimensions.

Apologies for the late reply, for some reason I've not seen more posts even hitting the "view new posts" button, thus thought this thread had died and had to go searching for it.....

I really like the look of the dry cell battery, tiny and should fit snugly, but at 3x the cost and restoration costs spiralling I might have to get that next time.

The 027 looks much squarer than what came out of the car, I think it's pretty much the one I got for my previous Elite (Bosch) and never really got it to fit right, not least making the cable terminals reach - they seem extremely short with no "give" in them to reach "tall" posts. Perhaps the Claasic show at the NEC will provide some answers

It's not that I can't do it, it's just that I don't know how.

After speaking to the gurus on the club stand today it would appear 075 is the preferred shape with a bit of "Lotus engineering" wood stuck under for stability.....

As for price if anyone wants a Bosch battery Andrew Page are pretty good on price, lucky to have a branch just around the corner from my house.

Sounds OK but who can tell if they are any cop without direct experience. They are a few Quid less than the ODYSSEY PC925 (380 crank amps) I have in the Excel (@ £132), but myself and friends have some experience of ODYSSEY and they do last and perform well.

ODySSEY CLICKY

I wonder where they are made? I ask this because if replacement batteries for phones and laptops are anything to go by, then those made in China have a short service life in my very own experience.

If going for the Bosch S5004/075 OpticalBoffin's suggestion is cheapest:
