Started with this.



Bought some new speakers and sound deadning stuff and applied to door panel and door.



The reduction in road noise and general rattles is astonishing. For instance I can hear the exhaust tone much clearer now and at speed, if you have music on, it doesnt sound like the band are playing from the back seat The whole care somehow feels more solid. And for those of you thinking the solidness has come from loads of added weight; the total weight for the two doors is a little over 2kg so I've added about 1kg of weight evenly per side towards the centre of the car. I certainly havent noticed any difference in handling etc and I seriously doubt there actually is any (ducks to avoid a flaming ) I've been careful not to cover any screws / nuts / central locking gubbins etc as I dont want to have to pull it all off as soon as something develops a fault! Anyway, I'm well pleased with the results of this mod, I was expecting at best a minor improvement but the difference is really noticable.

That looks like a neat job Shaun. What sort of soundproofing is that?

I'd be interested to know the make if it's affordable. The last stuff I used from the states was very expensive.

PS is this a late breaking story or do you need to adjust the camera date

The product I used is called 'Silent Mat'. It's available form Car Audio Direct . I paid 45.00 for a 20 sheet pack although I only used 14. I may use the other 6 somewhere else at some point. I think you can buy smaller packs so if you only buy 14, it may work out a bit less.

It's cheaper, lighter and easier to work with than dynamat but the performance is similar IMHO

I really must disable or correct the date on my camera

Dynamat is hideously expensive, I brought some home from hols in my suitcase to save £££s!

The one thing that spoils my enjoyment of the Esprit is it's noise at speed, a lot of the sound deadening was left off deliberately to make it more "sporty" but I wish they hadn't! I suspect most of it stems from door booming and the poor fit of the sealing rubbers, so will try your solution.

I also have some foam/lead/foam sandwich to do the bulkhead at some stage, but the carpet is so thin and easily torn I haven't had the bottle to try stripping it out yet.

Is "Silent mat" the brand?
This is the kind of thing i've been looking for.

i guess from the pictures , that it's about 1-2 mm thick?

Hi Mat & Stell, yes the stuff on the Ebay link is what I used. The brand is Silent Coat and the product is Silent Mat (I think, they dont make it particularly clear!). If you go to Car Audio Directs' site, they do a range of products by the same company.

Stell, yes its approx 2mm thick. very easy to bend cut and stick, although the weather was very warm when I did it so that probably helped a little.

I've since added some to the boot area and I'm hoping to do under the rear seat at some point. It seems most effective on the doors though.

I added some to the floor and it made little difference, was told I should have gone for foam/rubber/lead there so wasted my money Like you say the doors seem the biggest gains, I'm also looking out for some additional rubber section around the door opening to make up for the OE variety which doesn't actually make contact with the opposing surfaces.......

I fitted Silent Coat to my car as per Shaun last week.

Although I can't say I noticed such a marked overall noise reduction as Shaun did on his car it was worth doing. The quality of sound from the (non-standard) front speakers has certainly improved.

Funny you should mention that, i was talking to Mark & Ian last week about this as Mark was a champion in car hifi builder chappy, and they said they used flashing...........cheaper and as good.................
