Electrical buzzing when rad fan cuts in

For all those wiring gremlins we love, this is the place to discuss them.

Electrical buzzing when rad fan cuts in

Post by very_worried_man »

Hi

I'm new here and glad to have found it. Got an '89 SE 95,000 miles in Calypso and very chuffed.
All electricals seem to work fine, but when the rad fan cuts in (and sometimes when does not) I get a buzzing sound from around knee height under the dash to the right. The fan switch works reliably and I have run it through several cycles of engaging/disengaging to test it. The buzzing sounds like a contact struggling to remain closed and my gut feeling is that it could be a relay :?

Wondered if you could help as I wanna get back to the uninterupted sound of the twin-cam and the wife telling me to go 'carefully'....

Yup - it's a faulty relay. Just unplug it and pop in a replacement - 40A double pole single throw should do it.

A search here for fan relay should produce all the details you need for a replacement.

If you want a quick test - you can swap it with the relay for the interior fan. Locations are in your handbook and the parts manual.

SORN - just say NO!
