Want an Excel - help needed

Post by RR3 »

I'm interested in buying a late Excel.

Having owned 4, maybe 5, maybe 6, Elite/Eclat in the late 80's, I'm coming back to wanting a Lotus. The 4 seater cars are still one of the best designs that ever left the drawing board, just a pity that Lotus never had the finances to put the engineering content into them. The late Excels however may be my final revenge on Lotus, in that I may get one that can actually withstand being used without needing a w/end rebuild.

Have already got comfort (Range Rovers) and speed (UK Supra 550hp) covered off, this will be one to enjoy, just for what it is. It will get a complete rebuild, but is not intended for concours or showing or needed as the everday car. It will get used as part of our fleet and enjoyed.

So what I'm after is a late 89 -92 SA or Manual (unless someone can suggest why or why not). I'm not after the "best" car but what is important is that it has good history (mileage either by log book, MOT's, service stamps etc) and is more or less factory complete (or can be returned to factory quite easily).

If you have or know of one please let me know. Also any advice on why or why I shouldn't do this, would be appreciatted.

Thanks

There always seems plenty about; Pistonheads, Ebaymotors, Car and Classic, even Autotrader. Have you exhausted those yet?

Thanks for all your responces -

I have been around all the usual places and there are quite a few about and at competative prices.

As I said, I'm after an Excel that's as near factory spec as poss, with traceable history. (i.e. A Lotus Excel......not a kit car......oops, no offence meant). So I was looking to see if anyone had something (or knew about) one tucked away somewhere.

I have seen the Lotusbits website/company, and I'm sure I will be using their services in the future. can anyone provide honest feedback about them (please remember this is an open website).

Lotusbits are a great bunch of guys and really know the Excel and everything to do with sorting, upgrading or replacing parts.

They have just serviced (inc cambelt) the blue one, put in a new rack, recharged the air con and balanced the wheels. Excellent service.

Who mentioned kit cars? :?

Clearly offence was intended.

Are you thinking the Clan is a kit car?

Martin's (Texas2201) car is very fine example and the fact that it has just had work done at Lotusbits can only make it more desirable.............I do take offence at my car being called a kit car because i mod it, I firmly beleive that ACBC would have been happy with the changes i and others have made i.e. up rated brakes (so i can stop as cars should now), up rated suspension so i can go round corners faster with my uprated engine and i am held in place with my replacement seats. Oh and before i forget i have less unsprung mass with my replacement wheels as the original Oz wheels were buckled. Mike Taylor runs 300hp on his 912 engine and i am sure Mr Chapman would if he was still here be very interested in how he had managed it, and lets not forget that Lotus started with modded cars!!!!!!!!!!!!! in fact ACBC was the king of modifiers. There are lots of good people in the Lotus world and up there are the guys at Lotusbits along with the people on this forum i would have not been able to enjoy the Excel as much as i have through both the traumers and the good times over the 5 years i have been both a forum member and an Excel owner............................ :x
