Not sure what the black and gold tri-oval badges represent but the original owner had five of them put on my car.

PH Gassing station has a string on the black badge under urban myths -
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topi ... 08741&i=60. I bought GJA 2V and Graham had a black badge fitted to the nose (earlier pictures of his Excel in Club Lotus News showed it originally had a green/yellow badge), which suggests that he preferred the black badge. Such a preference, plus the symbolism/association with Jim Clark and the Old Man, could drive a price differential. However, for authenticity I think that a green/yellow badge is correct (and more cost effective).

One black and gold tri-oval on the nose as expected, one on each of the 'B' pillars and two each side of the boot lid.
Whoever put them on must have had a huge discount for that many.

Mention of the myths connected to the black Lotus badge reminded me of the time I decided to re-furb.a worn out 1960s RAC badge. At the time I had a black Mini Cooper 1275 and chose to paint the blue areas of the badge black to match the cars bodywork. I was asked so often why the badge was black and white instead of the normal blue and white I ended up having a stock joke reply about how the RAC changed it's badge to black in the year of the death of it's most important member, HRH Prince Albert. More often than not my explanation was accepted without question.
I still have the badge - I wonder how it would look on the Excel?

Mine is equiped with 1 front, 2 at bpillars and 1 at boot black and gold. Probably from factory,as i wanted to remove the 1 at boot , but there was a deep cut from the badge into the color and fibreglass( about 1 mm deep)
