Jack restraining strap

Post by TrevorK »

My jack restraining strap broke free the other day. The clip which is fixed to the car has rusted through.

I've peered down into the well where the jack lives and, as far as I can telll, the strap is retained by a lump of rust. I assume this used to be a bolt. I can't see or feel what it screws into so I suspect it may be a nut moulded into the fibreglass. I doubt it will come undone and, if I try, it will rip the captive nut free.

Am I right or am I missing something? If I am right, any suggestions on how to fit a new strap?

Thanks in advance for advice and suggestions.

Hi Trevor, I'll have a look on my car, I haven't looked for it before, but would guess it's similar to the mounting for the battery stays on the other side, in which case it is simply a bit of flat bar with a threaded hole in it that was moulded in. Will take a pic when I get a chance - it doesn't come out through the fiberglass too easily!

On my car it's an M6 bolt head.

There's a blob of rust approx 6" either side ( one visible in the photo), 3 in total, which I suspect also started lifts as bolts

I may be wrong ,but I'd be surprised if they are not 3 bolts retaining the rear side skirt between the bumper and the Spat. If thats the case, the nut part will be fixed into the skirt and should be an easy repair.

If that's where the strap is I don't have one! That space has been claimed for a fuel pump and filter/pressure regulator in my car.

There will be a brass nut type thing that the bolt will have rusted itself to in the lower bumper bit and it will probably just turn endlessly - would need to remove all 3 to get the whole thing off, as well as the spats. I replaced mine with screw-in nuts from a cupboard supply place. Pic below - original is on the left - pressed/moulded in to the bumper. I removed mine, re-drilled the holes, used the middle nutsert to cut new threads into the rubbery material and then used the one on the right for final installation - it has an M6 thread on the inside if I remember correctly.
