Air-con belt

Is it normally necessary to remove the lower pulley in-order to change the air-con belt on a 912HC?
Just wondering if everyone has the same problem or whether I have the wrong belt or tensioner pulley fitted to my car. According to my notes the belt is 12.5 x 800mm.
