Lower front grille mesh-alternatives?

Post by Johnwindwood »

Guys

Just got a replacement front bumper/spoiler (ABS one piece type) for our car. We are going to have it soda blasted and painted and then want to fit new grille mesh (Our original has disintegrated and the replacement is rusty and damaged.) Has anyone found a good substitute mesh? Maybe stainless ?

Thanks
Kind regards

John

Secondhand replacements are available from the usual suspects and if properly treated against rust and painted or powdercoated would be fine.

You'd have to custom build a stainless mesh. Personally, I think that the stainless finish might look out of place as there is hardly any brightwork on the Excel, but it could be painted or coated. You should probably crimp a surround onto the mesh to avoid sharp edges.

No bright ideas here I'm afraid!

Custom is fine Richard. I think the stainless finish would be pretty much invisible anyway, but could always paint it black.
Kind regards

I've used ss woven on the Clan . Looks good and would be OK for the Excel.

As above except I only paid £13.99 for exactly the same spec and size...so beware!

also bear in mind. SS wire is harder to cut than mild steel. Also it is WOVEN so where you cut it on a curve or at an angle the ends do need to be tidied/secured.

that said it will out last the car I reckon!

The last one looks fine to me. Now how must it be attached to the car?

Haven't tried it on Excel, but for the Clan the mesh sits behind cut-outs within the front spoiler. I've attached the mesh with (an invisible bead of) silicon behind the aperture. The new ss mesh replaced aluminimum mesh on the Clan which had corroded.

Warning: It was difficult to remove the old aluminium mesh - the silicon remained stuck fast after ten years of all seasons service. Fine if you never need to remove it.
