Cheers, I thought there was another Lotus specialist near to me but I thought it was SJsports, when I moved up here I looked up their address I realized it wasn't. Thought I was mistaken and Lotusbits were the only parts and Lotus garage. Now I know better, and Paul Matty's is only 30 mins from me, very useful cheers.

I'm running again.

Got the car started on wednesday but had a few teething problems. I got it all sorted by thursday evening and had a few successful test drives. I have now used successfully for two days of short journey's to work - about 5 miles each way.

Car drives lovely, haven't pushed it at all 3000rpm max so far. No leaks or coolant loss so far.

Mot expires on monday and a test booked for tuesday, I tried to do it thursday but had to cancel until I sorted the billowing white smoke I was experiencing at the time.

I didn't skim the head. I changed the exhaust manifold gasket replaced 6 studs and the nuts for stainless etc. Cleaned the head and engine and liners as best as I could. Figured it was worth a gamble as a skim wouldn't do much for the corrosion on the head and the extra valve work would take more time and money.

Changed the cambelt, luckily the crankcase pulley came off easily.

I tried rebuilding putting the head on then the exhaust manifold but I could not do it, so took the head off again and put the manifold on and refitted head. Freaking nightmare.

I had a lot of oil leakage initially, not sure exactly where the oil was coming from, possibly just the cam covers until I replaced the 3 cover bolts I mangled.
But I also re-torqued the cam housing studs and the leak appears to have gone away.

Anyway, thanks for all the help!

Its been a while now so thought i would update. I'm not sure how many miles I have done - the odometer stoppped working!! I must have disturbed something while doing the head gasket.

Been driving the car to work and back regularly, about 10 miles each way, no drama's with the engine and it drives perfectly. Took it on to the A46 a few times, 60mph for 5 minutes before pulling off just to ease it in.

Slow starter motor and poor starting prompted me to clean the engine earth strap connection which cured the slow starter and the rear fog light dimming when brake applied as noted in recent mot. Booked it in today for 2 new front tires as they were an advisory when I bought the car.

I was ready to leave early I took the car out for a drive. Mostly 50mph country lanes around here its the first proper run its had, and the car drove perfectly. :D

I've fallen in love again. It is an adorable car and it feels like a true gentleman's carriage. The handling, the refinement, the power. Easily one of the best cars I've ever driven.

So I'm very happy!

Thanks again to everyone for all the help!
