It is the build number (last 4 didgts of the chassis number).

Not sure they used all the numbers in order so build number doesn't mean it was the 3000 one built

Well the parts turned up from SJS Friday morning and Saturday I got fitting. Ordered the amp to dizzy lead (£23), rotor arm (£4), Dizzy cap (£3), HT Leads (£26) and the plugs (which I already had). The rotor, dizzy and the plugs all seemed fine but the leads were shot. All back on and a 80 mile test drive later (in glorious weather  ) and we seem to have cured it  . Thank God for that!

Thanks for all your help and advice people!

[Devil's advocate mode]

And now the weather is warmer, any carb icing will have vanished.

Sounds like you needed to change the HT leads though.

OK then......maybe the carbs weren't iced up too

In my defence when it happened on the way home the ice warning light on the dash wasn't even on which would mean that it was more than +4 degrees or there abouts.

(Just trying to convince myself that it wasn't a wasted £70! )

Look at it this way. The problem is cured, and it only cost you £70. Not only that, you have rejuvenated the ignition system and you probably won't have to touch it for some time. :)
