Correct, the door trims are off and I can get to all the rods. However, I believe the actual latch mechanism, the one that connects to the striker plate in the door frame, is broken. The rods connect to the latch mechanism through a couple of plates and these seems to be far more moveable than they should. Thus my conclusion is that they do not connect properly to the part of the latch that needs releasing.
