with the aircon on and the engine up to temp the other fan kicks in and this one stops? when the other one has cooled the engine and kicks off this one starts again
help! I replaced the relay but the problem is still the same
You have a change-over relay when what you need is either a twin or double make and break (I prefer a double as the two circuits are then isolated from each other a little)
This page :
http://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/product_list/36 shows the most common relay types with their labelling so you can check what you actually have.

my relays are 20/40 but with an 87 and 87a so angus you reckon the one with 87b is correct - I will hunt around and see if I can find one

87/87a = changeover
87/87b = double circuit.
87/87 = twin circuit
The difference between double and twin is minor and entirely inside the relay.

Sorry, been out; echo what Angus has said.
There is a link on the first page of this topic to a suitable supplier and part.

but only for a short period of time...........
fitted the correct relay this afternoon and the fan is no longer on permanently. However, the fans only cut in if the aircon and interior fan are on?
Anybody got any clues?

AFAIK they should come on if aircon is on so that the condenser gets extra cooling - and aircon is only on if the interior fans are running - so that sounds OK to me.
Are you sure it's getting up to a temperature where the fans should kick in ? Is your otter switch OK ?
What happens if you bypass the otter switch ?

temp gets up to the red and fans dont kick in
I will look at the otter switch and until I solve it I will keep the air con on

Thanks Jerry I have gone down the same route as Chris - all I need to do now is be able to swage - whatever that is?
how does that fit by the way?

Well what can I say - replace a relay, a 2amp(?wtf is that all about) and fitted the same as Chris to sort my fans out. I even took off the bonnet for easier access! Nothing went wrong bar a few minor swearing moments...........but we will gloss over those.......
All sorted fans cutting in at 90 and going off at 80 marvelous
