Mine is a later model and has the warm air feed for the airbox so not sure it is that. I changed the fuel filter when I did the pump recently and it has been fine since.

Thanks all for the suggestions

P.S. Still waiting for AA!

was the fuel from somewhere you usually fill up? its easy to get a hand full of rust from a garage that regularly lets there premium fuel tanks run dry...

You need to check its working. There should be a little temperature controlled vacuum switch that allows inlet manifold vacuum to the large(ish) diaphragm on the air flap. This then moves the flap to allow warm air from the exhaust manifold jacket into the air box. The vacuum switch often fails, or the flap seizes up through lack of use. On a car this old, I suppose you have to consider the diaphragm failing also.

Hi

Symptoms sound exactly like when my fuel pump points siezed. A sharp rap on the pump body (accessible behind boot panel) with a solid object brings them back to life until the points can be replaced / cleaned

ooops sorry...didn't read that far. But I'd still be checking the fuel delivery....maybe blow back down the pipe (needs to be disconnected, as there's a cut off valve)

Sorry to hear it didn't go right for you today. Should it not work out with your buyer in the future I will still be available either this Saturday (Valentines Day - I won't live that one down!) but definately from 22nd Feb. Best wishes, Simon

Hi Wingnut
I used to live in |Brentwood and had the same experience is it the A 12?
Seriously though, it was on an XR3 and turned out to be a casting swarf in the carb blocking the pipe which created the vacum for the cold air flap (this was a casting fault and was cleared by drilling out the offending swarf), similar to the standard Excel setup. It did get very frustrating until one time I noticed that the carb was a block of ice. i.e. in the same weather conditions as we are experiencing now. By the time you have stopped scratched your head, sworn and kicked the tyres the carb has thawed and the car works again. You may not notice the problem in traffic only when there is forced cold air going to the carbs.

Hope this may help.

Well the AA finally came and found me. He confirmed it is most probably the HT Leads (Well done Angus!). I had a check of the vacum switch in the airbox whilst I was waiting and all seemed fine. It was running like a dog as the AA man followed me the 8 miles home but it made it. Looking at the leads they were fairly crummy. I guess fiddling around with them may have made them worse which would explain the fact that it is now running bad when cold too.

I will order the bits today and see if I can sort the problem. Will keep you all updated.

P.S. Hi Simon (Midge)! Didn't realise you were on here. I have sent you an email.

Put money on iced carbs. Somewhere on here is a photo of my hot air intake system. A high tech hose !!! that replaces the standard one but goes across the top of the engine and takes hot air from above the exhaust manifold. I use this all winter. If I can find it Ill put the picture back up.
