My wiper has recently developed a mind of its own. On starting up it might refuse to operate without a bit of jiggling. Or it might start up automatically without being asked. I guess it has something to do with the switch but I have no idea how to get at it!

I'd start with the easy checks of removing the fuses and relays (intermittent wipe) and cleaning the spades.
Sounds like something is damp or bad connection.

If the wiper starts up (without being switched on) straight after engine starting, then look to the engine earth strap, as the high current can cause a back-feed enough to move the wiper from park.
