Yes? You have to disconnect the filler neck and breather hose. I have enough fuel line to not disconnect from the fuel pump.pull the tank far enough back to access the sender and shove it back in. There were a bunch of washers on my securing bolts. I taped them together for reinstall as it's semi blind getting in it all back together.

Hi Bill, I had a quick exploratory look at this tonight and it does seem doable as you suggest. I think that I may have an issue though. Are the securing bolts in captive nuts? I tried cracking them with my socket set and after an initial tightness they turned (rather too easily), but there was no sign of them withdrawing. I fear that this may mean my having to remove the rear seat and possibly some trim to get at the far side.

On my early ones, there is a nut and large washer in the rear wheelarch, reachable w/o removing the wheel. Good luck, Jeff.

Thanks Jeff. Just checked on mine and there is a bolt (very rusty) in the wheel arch attached to a metal corner brace. I couldnt see sign that it has been rotating, but it certainly makes sense given how rusty it is. I think that I will spend a week spraying it with WD40 before I try again... and replace with new

On second look actually its obviously a different bolt to the one that I first noticed... still just as rusty

I replaced the nylock nut and bolt upon reinstall, there is the original washer in there still as well and harder to spot. You can see the shiny nut here in the upper wheel well. Don't mind that white stripe, I thought it was a scratch but it wiped off thankfully. This is the RHD driver side rear well.

Thanks again. I have finally got round to having a look at this. I am having some trouble removing the fuel filler hose and as a result cant quite move the tank back far enough to get the sender out (its frustratingly close, but the metal box with all of the gubbins in it snags in the hole. Is there a knack to removing the hose? The trouble is that it is so short that I cant get much movement on it.

OK. So managed to finally move the filler hose. Turns out that there is not enough play in my fuel line to move the tank back sufficiently. Very annoying... lots of grazed hands and blisters later the car is back as it was. Another day where I feel that I know the car a bit better, but Im no closer to solving my problem. Oh well.
