Thanks Angus :D ,

I've only just got my head around being awarded the doctorate as I never though I was that bright! Been a very strange 48 hours.
As you know I had to sacrifice the Red Excel to help ease some of my financial pressures when I started (I am eternally grateful to Malcolm Ricketts for helping out with the sale!), however I've now got a nice pearl white one which is keeping me busy now.
Should have a bit more free time to do Excel stuff. 8)

Well done Jim. 8)

A lot of hard work, lots of lonely hours writing-up and many 'hoops' to jump through (excuse the pun). A small minority at Durham give-up at the write-up stage because it is truly a daunting task!

What is your area of expertise?

Cheers chaps,
I've been researching how mechanical loading (specifically vibration) degrades electric vehicle battery packs so warranty predictions can be improved at the prototyping stage. However I've had to develop tests from scratch along with new health and safety practices. I'm glad its over as the last few months have been pretty intense!

Jim,
Congratulations!
One more Dr on this forum (I suspect there are now quite a few).
Thankfully you don't need a bit of paper to be able to make great contributions. I've always found the discussion here extremely illuminating and well considered.

Thanks chaps, it was one of the most difficult things I have done.

I think its a case of having a shed load of tenacity rather than being super clever. I saw the same thing during my four years at Warwick Uni.

Very high level summary in about 80 words:

Li-ion Battery cells can have capacity loss and an increase in DC resistance when excited by vibration representative of 100,000 miles of customer use. However the observed degradation is impacted by cell charge state, cell orientation (within the vehicles battery assembly) and the anode and cathode materials of the cell. A noteworthy finding was that; the application of vibration can reduce charge transfer resistance. It is hypothesized that this is a function of improved electrode wetting through dispersion of the electrolyte.

I was thinking maybe the Elitric (or Elitrix, however that sounds a bit too much like a slot car).

Cheers Tony! The Viva was just as worrying as you said it would be! I think there are at least three people on the forum now who have doctorates. I was saying to Shaun the other night that I'm still the same d**k head as I was before I got the bit of paper!

My professional advice would be to get that looked at, or else it will eventually turn green, and NOBODY wants that! :D

Nah. The line is "Take 2 aspirins and call me in the morning". :D
I dropped out of medicine, did some chemistry and pharma science and eventually did my PhD in laboratory robotics, which was one up from meccano in the 1980s. Like invention, a PhD is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Well done for your achievement 8) - definitely worth doing.

Well, if I was right all the time I'd get to be predictable!

We tend not to use Aspirin these days, besides it's probably a virus. :)
