Removing the speedo cable '84 car

Post by majcd213 »

Hi Guys- now I have removed many a speedo cable in my time so I'm slightly embarrassed about this post! However- I'm currently struggling to remove the pedal box from my 84 car and although I'm getting there I need to remove the speedo cable to pull the thing out. The parts manual shows a typical cable connection to the rear of the speedometer- ie a knurled cover screw that holds on the outer and a simple square-ended inner cable that just slips in and out .... Well my car is an 84 and doesn't have that. The cable terminates in what seems to be an overly elaborate cover or sheath which does detach and pull back.... but leaving the naked cable firmly embedded in the rear of the speedo where it slips into a yellow cylinder. My suspicion is that this is a case of cable and speedometer having achieved spiritual and physical union through the joy of corrosion- and its just stuck but I don't want to pull too hard in case its more than that. What is this yellow cylinder for instance and is it part of the speedo or the cable?

All the posts I've seen speak of just unscrewing the darned thing so I suspect its simple, but having spent quite enough on this car I'd rather save the cost of a speedo if I can!
Cheers
Mike

you are right... With the grey something you have pulled back, the cable should (!) go with it. IMO pulling the cable out there should do the rest.

I have had a quick look in the parts store... you keep your money  the yellow thing is already part of the speedo, where the cable gets in.

Thanks all- got the cable out eventually- hoping I didn't damage the speedo itself! However- whilst I was removing the pedal box a couple of spacers dropped out. The smaller ones are for the steering column brace but the long bar shaped one is a mystery. I think it came from the front left hand side- does anyone recognise it? If so could you point me at the relevant parts diagram for refitting?
Thanks
Mike

Looks like the pedal box to body plate washer item 13 section 14.01 in the parts

Thanks- but no its not that. That was on the outside of the bulkhead and I have it. This fell from the inside somewhere on the left -. The plate washer is a flat washer strip and this is a definite bar.
I couldnt see it in the parts diags.
Cheers

I think this bar is probably a spacer that goes across the top of the pedal box inside the car. However its not shown on any parts diagrams. Does anyone know if its genuine and should be present in these early cars, or whether its a LBPO bodge?

Hi all... checked with Lotusbits who had never seen such a spacer. They were also kind eniugh to check an 83 car and it had no spacer. It seems this is either a compensation for the bent box or simply for short legs in a previous owner!
