Restoring leather - feed before or after painting on lacquer

Post by NickC »

I havn't done any work on the leather for quite a while, forgotten how to do it.

Do I feed the leather before applying the lacquer or after, or both?

I have the rear seats removed to do the seat-belt brackets so while they are out thought I would restore them a bit, still got 3/4 of a pot of Connolly paint left. When that runs out are there any alternatives that anyone would recommend?

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick have a look at the leather restoration products that Woolies Trim do,http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/c-117-lea ... ation.aspx Ive used there stuff with mine and it brings up a great finish. They do a "finishing" compound not unlike leather food which is applied at the end of treatment. Were you to apply first I don't think the Connonly paint would adhere properly.
Hope this helps!

The Woolies finishing compound is to waterproof the top coat of the treatment. I've used Furniture Clinic and Liquid leather, I'm fairly sure both those say to feed before applying but then clean the surface. That way the leather has the oils back in it as necessary but there's not anything to stop adhesion of the new surface coating. I think when I spoke to Nick Fulcher a long time back (I was thinking of Nick doing leather re-colouration fro me on another car) he said about feeding it for a while before taking the leather to him.
