Rear Speaker

Post by Tanz »

I now know why the sound out of my car sterio sounds so bad

Image

Looks like it has just disintegrated over the last 22 years. The rear speakers have a nice cover/ grill over them with the word Lotus across the center which I want to keep. Has anyone replaced the rear speakers with new ones with the same mounting holes in the flange?? The cover/grill uses the same holes. If not I guess Mike Taylor might have some second hand ones in better condition than mine.
Cheers, Phil

Hi Phil, one of my rear speakers stopped working a couple of years ago. I found replacements very easily at the local branch of Wilco. The chap didn't want to sell them to me as he reckoned that the coaxial design gave a poor sound but they sound fine to me. :D From memory they were 4 inch, might have been Alpine, I threw out the box and old speakers when we moved.

Went to Halfords and they are selling all in car entertainment at half price, as they are due to launch a new range very soon and want to shift the old stock. Got a pair of speakers for £19.99. The mounting holes are an exact match so they were a simple matter to swap with the originals. Had to cut off the spade connectors as the new ones have different connections. Very pleased - sound much better. OK - not high end top of the range but with the wind noise in the Excel who cares :) Reused the Lotus grills.

In these election times I wondered if "rear speaker" is a euphemism for a politician; after all most of them speak through their rears!

Just changed mine for the Maplin's set. The originals were in a worse state than Phils!

Sounds is much better now - makes me realise how bad the fronts must be.

Just measured mine - they seem to be 3.5" and I've found a pair of replacements on ebay for £17.00 - dash speakers from VW Golf, headrest speakers from MX-5. Will report back when I have them and have attempted fitting.
