Radiator fans

I have a problem with my radiator fans, they run all the time the ignition is on. Got stuck in traffic on saturday and the fans cut-in but didn't go off again. I have disconnected both cables from the otter switch, but the fans still kept running. Is this normal? I had suspected a faulty switch, thinking that disconnecting it would stop the fans, but no.
As we were about a hundred miles from home I decided to pull the fuses and hope that the traffic wasn't too heavy on the journey home. Got back OK, but still have the problem. Any advice would be gratefully received.

stuck relay at first guess, unless you have AC, then it could be a whole host of things... what year is your car?

My money's on the relay. It's probably corroded inside and stuck on.

Well I've checked the relay (swopped with start drop-out relay) still no joy!

The car does have 'aircon' and it's an '89 model.

the radfan relay is a special one... only to be replaced with the same unit... if you have ac it can also be a whole host of things... jus take a look at the wireing diag...

Radiator fan relay is B079M6141F (the most common on the car), but the starter drop-out is NOT (A089M6058F). It's better to swap the interior fan relay with the rad fan relay for testing as they are the same type (located next to each other anyway) and should both be rated at 40A though a 30A replacement can be used if desperate. If I remember correctly, the starter drop-out is a change-over which would have one fan or the other running all the time, whereas the fan. relay is a proper double-pole single throw which does an on-off on the two fan circuits. It's late. I can't be bothered digging out my circuit diagrams to verify that though.

Which manual & sheet are you looking at ? - I can't find a 6057F anywhere in the relays, control units section. It definitely has the rad. fan relay the same as the interior fan relay - and mine are both the same and working correctly.

mine is E089T0325J stamped up as AUG 1991, part 43 yeah.

if you take a look at the wireing diag it clearly shows that it is not a normal relay, and if you take a look at sheet 35 is shows you how it is diffrent, because of the twin 15A outputs... replacing with a normal relay will cause only one fan to work and possibly one to spin (slowly) all the time...

I think it is the relay, though I will not get one until tomorrow, but now having removed the original, the fans have stopped. Of course it does help if one looks at the diagram in the parts manual the correct way around.

I first pulled out what I now know as No.40, which is diagonally opposite, I had swapped this with the purge pump relay next to it.

Incidentally I have the same parts list as you Mark (stamped August '91) and it gives the same number that you quoted for this relay.

I have tried a few motor factors locally but no-one had one in stock. Should be getting one tomorrow though. The difference seems to be the twin outputs.

One of my fans is now staying on when I switch the ignition on? it was fine before and it is a new fan fitted last year.

with the aircon on and the engine up to temp the other fan kicks in and this one stops? when the other one has cooled the engine and kicks off this one starts again

help! I replaced the relay but the problem is still the same

Check the relay - it has to be double pole switching. I was once supplied with a similar one with alternate pole switching which did what you have described.
