Hi Peter, it wasn't me, but.... from the old forum I had a tip that the VW Golf hatch strut fits. I changed mine last summer for a one from a Mk2 (I think) and it fitted perfectly, hope this helps
Thanks guys, I had heard that a Range Rover tailgate gas strut would replace the original Excel unit. There appeared to be more than one type on eBay, but I see here that the "Classic" unit is the one. On order now and I can't wait to get rid of the old one as I am tired of getting my head banged every time the wind blows. LOL
I've been looking to buy a Range Rover Classic strut too but the new struts I've seen for sale seem to be supplied in pairs. I don't want a brand new strut lying around the garage - I've enough junk already.
When getting a replacement gas strut, make sure that the end stop is the gas strut and not the bonnet.
The force from the gas strut will deform the bonnet after a while.

I've found an on-line vendor who will supply a single new RR Classic strut for £10 incl p&p. I'll post details on this forum tomorrow once I'm sure my order has been accepted at that price.
Thanks guys, the Range Rover Classic Strut was a perfect fit and it is great to open the bonnet with fingertip pressure. It took all of five minutes to change. It is so nice to get under the bonnet and not have to worry about it falling on my head either.
They did come as a pair and were not expensive, so if anyone is desperate, I know that the spare fits the excel.
