So long as the hub carrier is properly supported give it some pressure. It might go with a bit of a crack when it first starts moving. You could try a bit of heat focussed on the bearing race itself but chaces are you will also be heating the driveshaft as well.

Thanks for that last piece of advise - and being that bit braver brought success.
Now just need to put it all back together again with the new backplates, bearings and seals.
