Window Frame Seals

Post by rbgosling »

One of the smaller tasks I'd planned for the Resto Show in March was fitting these window frame seals from SJ Sportscars.

These are not original parts, but according to SJs something similar was used on later Esprit doors. They glue onto the outside of the window frame to provide an extra seal. Since my windows have a habit of whistling and leaking a little air at high speeds, it seemed like a good idea.

Until I came to dry fit them - when it was immediately clear that they wouldn't come close to sealing against the door aperture.

I could fit a finger in the gap; the seal barely protrudes from the groove it was sitting in. So totally useless.

If anyone has got a window frame that is a much tighter fit to the aperture and thinks it might work for them (or has an Esprit they think it might work in), you're welcome to them for the cost of postage.

Can you adjust your window frames Richard?
I replaced my drivers side frame with one from Angus a while back. The mounting holes are slotted to allow some up/down movement to reduce that gap. My passenger side frame is an older replacement that doesnt seem to have those slots, and so is much more limited in is adjustability - and has a similar sized gap to yours.

I did my own using the soft part of a door seal where I cut the hard but off with a knife. I then glued them into the frame. I've put a link below to the post but the images seem to have disappeared even though they are still on onedrive.
I will try and repost the images but I can tell you that they really work, much better with them in.

Adjusting the window frame position won't really help. OK, if I can move it up a bit it would help at the top, but I'd have to get it VERY close before the seal contacted the door aperture, let alone actually pressed against it with any load. Even then, there would be a gap at the front and rear, and if I moved the frame forward to fix the front it'd just make the rear gap worse. And the gap would then be uneven, which looks crap, at the moment it's pretty constant all the way round.

Bash, I guess whatever you fitted must have protruded from the window frame a bit further? The pictures on your post seem to have broken, so I can't see what you did.

You need to navigate using the my files option not the picture option to get the embed functionality for some reason.

Well don't though for managing to repost pictures here.
