As will be seen on another thread, I've been having problems with the oil and temp gauges (Smiths, as fitted to Elite S2.2) reading high. It looks like this is a faulty voltage stabiliser which I'll get round to fixing as described on that thread.
It may also fix another problem which is a chattering or fast ticking sound from behind the dash which has always been present. My first thoughts were speedo cable or rev counter, but although the chattering gets faster at speed/revs, it is not proportional to either. Then today it struck me - the instrument voltage stabiliser is a bimetallic strip with a coil that makes/breaks contact at a rate that will deliver a steadyish 10v to the instruments. I believe it is this that is making the noise, as the chattering is not so pronounced when the gauges read high (i.e. the stabiliser isn't working properly.)
Anyway I'll update this thread once I do replace the stabiliser.

Re: Chattering noise behind dash
I had a chattering noise behind the dash which bugged me for ages. Eventually, I found it; a cable mounting bracket under the bonnet - close to the bulkhead - which had come loose!

Re: Chattering noise behind dash
Before I made Ethel watertight, there was always chattering going on behind the dash above the footwell. It only ever happened after it rained.... the moisture was running into the back of the relays and causing them to click and chatter.
Bulkhead seals and seals everywhere replaced after painting and all relays were replaced with new higher spec during rewiring process = all good and no chatter.

Thought the chattering noise usually comes from the passenger seat

Actually the main noise coming from SWMBO in the passenger seat is the incessant tapping out of text messages etc. and of course I get into trouble if enthusiastic driving disturbs this process. I've figured out that auto gearbox sport settings are achieved by tightening the kickdown cable, so maybe I'll implement this one day with two settings, 'normal' and 'swmbo.'

Re: Chattering noise behind dash
The chattering I have behind the dash has just started, and after installing a mechanical Oil Pressure gauge. The fuel tank gauge shows a varying reading which I thought was fuel slopping but I now doubt that. The water temperature gauge gives a stable reading as the engine warms up.
I do not have a rain problem here in Malaga.
Can someone guide me to find the voltage regulator behind the dash, any pics?
