Emissions data

Post by amarshall »

Chaps - I'm a little curious about something, could those of you who have your MOT certificates handy do me a favour and post up your emissions readings please ?

Mine from the last few years :

2012 (150236 miles ) : CO 0.78 % vol, HC 83 ppm
2011 (139532 miles ) : CO 1.34% vol, HC 211 ppm
Engine rebuilt at approx 121k miles in 2010
2009 (113768 miles) : CO 1.94% vol, HC 455 ppm
2007 (90727 miles) : CO 1.86 % vol, HC 497 ppm

(all using standard pump 95 RON from whoever I happened to be passing when the orange light came on).

Limits : CO 3.50% vol, HC 1200 ppm

(these are just the ones I found sitting in a pile - as the others turn up, I'll add them).

Perhaps should also post which fuel used at time of MOT.
Fuels have changed over the years not least the level of added alcohol.

I was about to say the same thing! :D
The ethanol content in fuels now-a-days has an impact on emissions and it is slowly increasing in concentration. I think its been in gasoline since 2009 and is typically at 5% blends (5% Ethanol and 95% Gasoline). I've got a feeling that this year / 2013 the concentration of ethanol will be allowed to increase to a maximum of a 10% blend.

Mine aren't on the certificate, but on a separate printout attached to it.

Not on mine either! There doesn't even seem to be a "box" for that purpose on these new style certificates. Are the MOT testing stations supposed to inform the owner Angus?

No idea - but I've been given an emissions printout every year for at least the last 10 on all the cars I've owned.

I'll be going to my local garage this week to organise a slot for them to fit new ARB bushes. I will ask about emissions info. I do remember a couple of years ago when there was major work being done for me by Chris Foulds Motors at the end Chris had to get it re-tested and mentioned that he would be weakening the mixture before the test so that it would pass and restoring it afterwards!!

September 2011 MOT:

CO 2.69% (Limit 3.5%)
HC 313 ppm (Limit 1200)

103,400 miles on the original engine, no rebuild.

This is running on Texaco Supreme Super Unleaded, 97 RON. I witnessed the MOT test, and the tester didn't have to emply any special "techniques" to get it to pass, it was just a straightforward emissions test. It also compared well with the CO reading I had taken myself with my Gunson CO tester. I could have adjusted the CO a little lower, but Lotusbits recommended a figure of 2.6% as ideal for these engines.

Hi.
You cant get much cleaner than that by the looks of that data,it almost looks to be running a little weak at 0.78 CO, but if it runs ok then great.
H.C is also very low, burning better after engine rebuild.
Dont think Mot stations have to give you an emissions data printout.

Cheers Terry.

The last occasion I got the emissions printout at MOT time was 2008. Figures were: CO 1.395%; HC361ppm. Mileage was 42893 and I run my SA on 97RON super-unleaded. Perhaps I'll make a point of requesting the emissions printout in future!

Passed MOT today.

CO 0.94

HC 433

Results were achieved without touching the carbs although they could probably do with a tweek

Mine failed the MOT a few weeks ago and the readings were CO:3.48% HC:351ppm. When I finally got it retested yesterday, (and passed) the readings were CO:3.07% and HC:456ppm without it having covered any miles in between.

I've had it SORNed this month as I've been unable to tax it without an MOT but come July it will be back on the road and the first thing in needs is a good long run to clear it out.
