I have never had a problem with the fuel pump and still haven't really, but I noticed the clicking you here when you first turn the ignition on sounded different. The car still drove OK and I did a 30 mile journey without a problem but I figured the car was trying to tell me something - a warning of pending doom!
So I removed the pump only to find that after 132,000 miles the points were worn out and one of the round contacts was loose and on the verge of falling off.
I have ordered a replaccement pump from SU. I could have converted the old pump to non points electronic but if a new pump lasts as long as the old one I will be happy with that. It helps that I use the car at least once a week all year rouund.
Old brass elbows need to be transferred to new pump. hope they point in the right direction when tightened.

Re: Fuel Pump
New pump arrived this afternoon. The new one is a bit longer than the old one but still fits. Note the British Leyland sticker on the old pump.
I was going to transfer the old brass elbows to the new pump but they won't seal with the 'O' rings. The old pump did not have 'O' rings. The threads were coated in a sealant - looks a bit like Boss White!! Any idea what sealant could be used - obviously needs to be petrol proof. Otherwise I need new elbows that do seat with the 'O' rings.

Re: Fuel Pump
Yes the threads are the same. I sealed the threads with Hylomar Blue - hope that works.
Going to test it in a minute. Fire extinguisher at the ready!! Won't start the car straight away - check for leaks first - fingers crossed.

Re: Fuel Pump
OK - the fire brigade can stand down. Pump working perfectly No leaks.
The pump that Burlen recommended was a SU AZX 1308 £185 including VAT and postage. It was a bit longer than the original and the positive wire on the car wouldn't reach the terminal on the end so I had to extend it. I assumed that all SU pumps would now be electronic so was surprised my new one was points. Should have done my research. If it lasts the same as the old one 132,000 miles that will do fine. It will probably outlast me! If you want the electronic version it is a AZX 1308EN £190.44 plus postage.

Right back to working on the Elan M100 now - Turbo needs to come out

I've never seen one of those short stubby ones like your original Phil.
