Calipers: paint or not?

Post by LotusMonkey »

While 16 years of standing still outside may not have been kind to my Excel, things are cleaning up well, as the rear caliper below shows. My question is - being quite new to this resto business - whether I should be painting them or not once rust free? Or perhaps some sort of high temperature clear coat to keep them original. I've already selected a black Jenolite brake caliper paint if I went down that route.

It will be a long time before this car is finding itself graded on a concourse, but I am interested in opinions on this with the main focus protection, but not wanting to do anything too dramatic, and broadly keep the car original. I'm not interested in doing a caliper exchange with one of the 'usual shop suspects' as I have already invested in refurb kits for every corner, and it is all part of the learning experience.

Admins - I couldn't find a section for braking etc, but please move if this should be elsewhere :)

I'm in the process of replacing the rear calipers/pads/discs on our Audi - I'm going to paint the caliper support brackets to stop any further deterioration. I'm going to remove all rust using a citric acid/surfactant solution and then paint them with a two-pack self-etch paint from BCS - Brake Caliper Services. It looks like good stuff - no primer, self-etch and gloss all in one product (not that the gloss bit matters to me!). They also paint calipers for you and offer a lifetime guarantee against corrosion!!

If you're going to paint them yourself you need to get all of the rust off first - vapour blasting would be my choice.

Some topics fit in many places so no issue with this
