Hi,
With the engine running nicely over the weekend it was time to turn my attention to stopping the car, starting with the handbrake! It turns out that the rear backplates are flapping around like cardboard and unsalvageable. Luckily I have a pair that were purchased some year ago that just need de-rusting and painting. What is the general view on painting these? I will use electrolysis and a rust converter spray all over, but wondered whether only the outside surface (facing the driveshafts) should be painted, given that the brake shoes need to move on the inner surface.
Appreciate your thoughts and any black paint recommendations too.

Re: Handbrake backplate painting
I'd paint everything! I've been using rustoleum gun metal spray cans - with primer. Very good results.
I used a solution of citric acid to clean some parts. Worked Fab.
AS an aside before you fit them, are the plates like newish and could be used as a template to get more made since they dont exist anymore?

I have 2 pickling in vinegar as I write, to remove the rust. Drums to follow.
Backplates will be cleaned, etch primed and sprayed black gloss, drums; heat proof black paint

Images below Stu - I think they will come up OK but the electrolysis starts tonight so we'll see! a dent in the edge of one and the green line is a plate of metal that has come away and I was thinking I was going to need to find a fab shop that will replace that strip, unless it turns out the one still on the car has that piece and I can transfer it.Hawaiis0 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 24, 2024 20:30I'd paint everything! With regard to templating and reproducing it is something that I was thinking about doing it they came up OK, though I don't really know anywhere local yet where I could look into to something like that or what the tooling etc might cost.
I'll pop up some other images if interested once they have had a clean.

I reckon those will be perfect for duplicating, we just need to find an outlet.
I'll do some looking
@pete b - any of your contacts capable of smashing something like this out?

Re: Handbrake backplate painting
Have you tried loosening the 2 off M8 bolts that hold the back plates to the Ali hub?
My back plates weren't too bad and I was going to remove for a good paint up. But didn't like the feel of the bolts when I tried to loosen. If they sheared, it would have meant a full strip blown of the hub / bearing to be able to drill out, so I left well alone on the end.
