Can anyone tell me if the cabin heater return hose is the best one to disconnect to drain coolant out of the bottom half of the engine block or is there better hose to disconnect.

On the nearside (left) of the block (behind the exhaust) there is a brass drain plug to do just that. It's a 1" NPT thread. They're a real bugger to get out - usually because no-one has bothered to do it before. If it doesn't come out without a 2 metre breaker-bar leave it in and pull the lowest hose
