It seems the biggest threat to this Elite is the new owner.
He assumes the fibreglass bodyshell has no inherent strength and the steel chassis provides all the body rigidity.
2000 pounds for a Lotus chassis wil be the bait for very much more expense.

The next episode will be at best interesting, sad to see an Elite peg it.

Is this the definition of a Hatchet man. I'd believe the door beams would agree....

Wind through the hair then. Id like to see it finished, its your car so keep going dont get put off. By the way, someone put an Elite shell on a rangerover chassis about 20 years ago but it was never finished off so take your own path.
Put the link in for your part two please.

Bash
Ps, technically the Elite doesnt have a chassis, its a subframe thats why the chassis plate is on the shell.

There's a chap down wiltshire way who did the Esprit St Tropez. So it can be done.
Window re-enforcement is essential if I recall.
I would look at the Audi TT cabriolet roll over system as a possible retrofit

I've added a comment inviting him over here; let's see if he takes the bait.

I have significant concerns about the structural rigidity without the roof, we'll see how it turns out. But I have to say the profile looks damned good, although I thought it was actually better at the rear before he made the second cut.

Those door beams give me the shudders....

I wonder how this butcher intends to insure this wreck.
I do not think he will even get to drive it out of his yard without turning it into a bent banana!
Has he checked yet the possible rust on the centre part of the chassis (Sub-frame separator)?

Dave the cog.

He's already resigned to replacing the chassis, before even looking at it (which seems the most sensible conclusion he's reached so far). Although he has been toying with sticking it on a Landrover chassis, like Jeremy Clarkson did with a Merc SL

If he does get that far, he really should have done the chassis transplant before chopping the roof off, there will be very little strength in that tub when he takes it off (what's left of) the old chassis.

I sold the 3 piece shell less floor and lower bulkhead Esprit shell to a guy (another nut case?) in Lancashire who had a commission to build a 'Bond' copy and sit it on a Reliant Robin chassis to be driven onto a stage at a Dubai hotel.... men in sheds eh....

I didn't know about your Europa, Andrew. When I have time I'll have a look for a thread about it. Is there one on here, or perhaps over on TLF?
