Power steering fluid leak

Post by Monkeyzak »

Hi.

I moved my car yesterday and noticed a big pool of power steering fluid under the car. The pump looks dry. Are there any weak points? Access to see is poor because of the under tray. I'll need to get the car up and get that off.

Hopefully it's not the rack

If you have a small leak in the rack, oil will collect in the boot over time. If you then apply full lock it will get squeezed out and leave a mess. But it is usually a problem you postpone and fix when convenient

The steel pressure/return pipes can corrode and leak. Might be easiest to remove the bonnet to take a better look.

This ^^ .
Happened to me on Aran 17 years ago. Terminal leak left me stranded.
High pressure line corroded. Expensive off the shelf replacement.

I cleaned everything off. It looks like a new pipe isn't tightened enough or more likely doesn't have an o ring fitted. I can't get it tighter and can't get it off. So I'll need to take it in somewhere and see if they can do it.

What year is your car - does it have the earlier constant-ratio rack or the later variable ratio type? Got any photos of the fixings?

Took it in to a local place. The owner has an old esprit. The new steel pipes fitted for the power steering don't seem connected well. He thinks it's the wrong pipe end fittings they've used. It's also pissing oil from there and from the cam covers and front bearing seal.

So Ive booked it in to get that sorted out. Also another issue but I'll start a new post so it shows up on a search.

The mechanic said front crank seal I think but also definitely cam covers. There's a lot of oil about the timing belt too. Which needs sorted asap.

Is there any way to get photos in from Google photos? Or from my phone? I don't use one drive.

Thanks

I use Google Photos. You need to make sure the permissions allow anyone to see your photo. I just right-click on the photo and select "Copy image link", then paste into my text, with the {img} {/img} (but with square brackets) around the link.

I'm not aware of any way of posting photos from your phone, sorry.
