Suspension problems

Post by lambert.john »

Has anyone else had this problem?

If I gun my Excel hard and, particularly, if the road is a bit undulating, I get a spasmodic rubbing sound from the rear as though the tyres are making contact with the wheel arch (I am running on 205/50*15 SP Sports). Does this mean my rear springs are shot?

Suspension problems

Hi John,

Yes, it does sound like your springs are 'giving' a bit too much.
I've noticed a mild case of something similar when 4-up over an especially bumpy bit of road.

There are a few possible causes and a good inspection with the wheels off might help you to decide what's needed.
First thing to check for is to see if you have a broken spring.

Then see if you have leaking shock absorbers or anything else that seems wrong visually.
After that you have to start looking for wear in diff/driveshafts etc.

Regards,

Mick.

Take a look at the exhaust pipes where they pass through the suspension. Any shiny bits indicate they're making contact. I've known them meet the inner CV-joint bolts for example.

I've 225 on the rear and not heard this.

I did get exhaust hanger problems that resulted in knocking of the silencers on the body wotk until I had a S/S systen fitted with oval back boxes.

Now no noises associated with tyres or exhaust contact at rear.....

Just a magnificent noise when the taps are open. :D
