Re: is it sacrilege to swap an Excel's engine
Just thought I'd let you know I'm going down the Lexus route. I purchased a donor car(lexus ) and have begun work on the Lotus.
Watch this space?
Sorry to Die hard Lotus fans but this is by far a cheaper option than rebuilding the lotus engine to any where near the standard power of the Lexus.
Tin hat on ready??

Well at least it has the same amount of letters and 3 of them are at the right place.
You could erase the other 2 perhaps.

What engine management will you use?

As sure as eggs are eggs, for some time to come there will be unmolested Excels available for the Lotus enthusiast to buy and cherish....so no worries.
Those that transplant a modern powertrain into a Lotus will be, in the main, doing it for themselves to cure an itch and answer a "what if"...and I've got nothing against that as in the 70's me and a mate put a Ford Cosworth 1600 into a Moggie Minor and it flew!
However, it will be a virtual dead end for the car's identity as a Lotus, so the resale market will be limited as most people interested/involved in the area motor transplantation tend to want to do it for themselves.
So the seller of transplanted cars might find they get more of a resale return if they strip it and sell the parts, so every transplant carried out is potential dead end for that particular car in the long term.
So in conclusion, I've nothing against transplantation 'cos the results can be fantastic (although I'm not inclined to do another) and as long as there are original Excels available for Lotus enthusiasts then everyone is happy and catered for.
