Engine running temperatures!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had a cool running problem in warm weather the car was running at 70°C & in cooler weather 60°C. I brought a new thermostat went to fit it and there was no old one in the housing. (I have fitted a new otter switch as I had no fan kicking in prior to this) Since I have done this I have a running temp of 100°C however the engine does not seem to me to be that warm nor has it boiled over. I'm only running one fan I notice a dual fan conversion is a mod often spoken about on the forum. Would this then get my running temp down to around 90°C or do I just have an inaccurate temperature gauge??

I think I would replace the temp sensor first as this is cheap to do. From what you say it doesn’t sound like it is overheating. Is the fan cutting in and out as it should? If it is cutting out, then it must be bringing it down to the correct temperature and the reading on the gauge is wrong.
Cheers, Phil

Re: Engine running temperatures!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is it 100°c when on the move or 100°c when fans kick in.
I had a problem with a new otterswitch that only kicked in at 100°c, maybe you have the same problem.
Under normal driving conditions gauge showed 85°c.

Re: Engine running temperatures!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think I posted this some while ago. I had temperature issues but whilst the head was being refurbed both the radiator and the heater matrix were flushed out and found to be full of sludge! A new thermostat was fitted along with a new otter switch, a heater control valve and a replacement second fan. Problems solved! Now runs happily just under 80 C with the fans cutting in just above that. The bonus is that the heater now works properly!

Re: Engine running temperatures!!!!!!!!!!!!
In my case every power consumer "lifts" the temperature.
means: with heater on max, lights on, wiper etc, the tempgauge rises near to 100° but has only 80 sth. Therefore no fan kicks really in.

Re: Engine running temperatures!!!!!!!!!!!!
the temp gague is in spec if its +/- 10oC, it is an indicator only!... but your simptoms seem to suggest you need to check the earths, id start with the engine earth strap then the earths on the peddle box...

Yes I would check the gauge and sender before doing anything more invasive. Either use a capillary gauge (no chance of electric inaccuracy), or test the gauge in some water of known temperature (say 80 degrees). You might be surprised, as I was when my dash gauge was reading 100 degrees, the actual coolant temperature was nowhere near that.

Many good ideas I'll have to check some of what's been said then come back to this. The power consumer is the most interesting because when on the way to work with the heater on but no headlights I think It ran cooler. On the way home with the wipers, heater & headlights and colder weather it ran hotter.
