Electric avenue....dead end ?

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.

Thanks for the link 'Bash'.

We'll now there's a thing. I had to chuckle when I read "and Geely can call on its new engine company Horse, formed in partnership with Renault."

Common sense and let customers demand dictate the solutions.
Shame we'll never be able to return to proper stick 'boxes😠.

I'm curious to see how Jaguar fares with their imminent re-launch - they have gone all-in on electric, right now you cannot buy a brand new Jaguar while they set themselves up for the fully electric re-launch next year. Given that demand for electric cars is not booming as had been expected, I worry for them, but they seem too committed to change tack now.

I will say, after nearly 3 years of EV ownership, I'd go EV every time for an everyday car. I even bought a near bangernomics-priced Nissan Leaf for the days I cannot/would rather not commute in my Excel (range is dreadful, but it's enough to get me to work and back, just!).

I drove the very fisrt production Leaf.. it was an LHD white example in 2011 I think, it was at Gaydon and we all had a go round the car park and down to the pub and back.. I rather liked it. A guilty secret is that I do like EVs however I think this all or nothing approach by the government is for the birds

I think most folk, me included. like the idea of an EV but they just don't deliver in the real world. If they were a good buy the government wouldn't have to bribe people to buy them with taxpayer's money. I read a report that said the majority of EV owners replace their EV with an ICE car. That's customers voting with their feet. A few years ago my brother was offered a very tempting lease deal on an EV but as his is a one car family it just wouldn't have been any good for him.

As for the Jaguar video it reminds me of the Sacha Baron Cohen character "Bruno". I'd love to think it was all a clever joke but....

Many BEV owners don't replace with BEV. That's telling. Lotus have seen the light.

My last two daily drivers were Jaguar sedans. I retired the x308 when it got to being a bit too "needy" for daily duties. I was having to work on it too often. I still love the car, but after it broke down on the way to a business meeting with a couple dozen people waiting on me to deliver a presentation, I figured it was time to retire it. I replaced it with an X250 because the X351 had grown too bulbous to fit in the garage where the X308 had been. It's now "retired" too. I was on a trip a couple years ago and had to get help at a Jaguar dealer about 900 miles from home. With Jaguar having closed so many dealerships, including the one I stopped at, I figured it was time to retire the X250 as well. Still have it too and still enjoy it occasionally but I'm afraid to drive it on a trip now because there are almost no dealers left and independent Jaguar repair shops here in Texas are so overwhelmed that they are scheduling two months out. So this summer I bought a new Ford Mustang (still have both Jag sedans if I need to carry four people out to dinner or something). But I figure just about every small town across America has a Ford dealer and otherwise any little shop ought to be able to fix most common problems with a Ford product. I had to get a new transmission on a Ford truck once upon a time and they had me on my way in less than 24 hours.

So yeah, Jaguar has really, really screwed up bad. I figure who is going to buy a $150,000+ piece of practically brand new cutting edge transportation technology that has only 50 dealerships around this vast country for support? And lets face it, Jaguar hasn't had the greatest reputation for reliability or repair costs. Who is gonna think the all new JaGuar is going to be able to do any better? The only reason people bought them despite their reputation was because they, up until the Callum era, didn't look like anything else on the road. I should sell the Jaguars, but they are worth so little right now. If I weren't capable of doing most all of my own repairs, I'd have to sell. But I'll probably hold onto them until they need some really major repair or something happens to them. But I'm resolved that now I just own two orphan brand vehicles like Pontiac, Oldsmobile or AMC but with even less support.

I'm two years into EV ownership (rear wheel drive Porsche Taycan). The range has been good and reliable, with so far no signs of deteriorating (I only charge to 80% unless doing a long drive, and avoid high kW chargers if I can). I have to say, it is great fun to drive, but I would only ever lease one. Nobody really knows what it is going to cost to replace batteries and when it will be needed at this point, and the technology is changing so fast, so I just went for a 'hand the car back' lease, rather than balloon option. It wasn't even an 'eco' decision, purely tax based as it is used as a company car.

Personally I am holding out for more progress on synthetic fuels, so I can continue enjoying the Excel long into the future, given how slow the progress is at the moment to get it off of SORN. I'd much rather keep an older car on the road and used than buying a new one that will take many years to offset its manufacture environmentally (which is the case with the Taycan).

On a separate note had the two motor 'Turbo' Taycan for a few days as a service loan car, my god it was tear your face off acceleration. Seeing how many dual motor sub 3 second 0-60 electric 'family cars' there are on the road, I don't think people realise how powerful they are when they order them - a lot of money for power that can never be used, will never see a track, and doesn't even look like a sports car. And reduced range.
