Rear Spring

Post by ianhateswork »

Hello.
Does anyone have an old pair of rear spring for an excel they would sell, softer the better.
My car went above its ride height due to dieting. I had the old springs compressed 20mm and retempered , but its not worked and now sits at 150mm.
I thought it was worth a punt, but i may have to speak to someone who know what they are doing.
thanks
ian.

Spring rates depend on the number of coils, thier diameter and thickness, my understanding is that one of these factors would need modifying to change thier characteristics. I would agree, you need a specialist spring company to sort you out.
Sorry, but I havnt got any spares though.

I used Springcoil in Sheffield when I wanted springs of a certain spec. Not too expensive and very knowledgeable.

Just been looking at a spring calculator and it seems that the spring rate is the same even though they are 11.5 inch.
Was not expecting that, I may have to give them a call.

LB have some new Eibach springs . They have removed a coil over the standard length. Might help you .

I have a pair or Avo coilover springs and shocks that I am looking to sell. Fully adjustable ride hight. They only have about 2000 miles on them. I've gone back standard springs and shocks and was expecting an improvement in ride quality but actually they feel very similar :?

I am not sure whether you want to change ride height or spring rate (stiffness) nor why you want to do this.
If you install shock absorbers with adjustable spring platform, you can lower the ride height and the spring rate is unchanged. However there may be a limit, as an example the Protech rear shock absorbers at normal ride height have a limited amount of thread below the spring platform to lower the ride height by any significant amount.
As an alternative, and to increase spring rate some people cut one spiral off the spring which also lowers ride height.
The suspensions on the Excel are one of the cars excellent features and any change is unlikely to improve the ride for normal use.
The suspensions are a complex unit and the spring is only one part, shock absorbers play a very important function, and a change in ride height affects the suspension geometry of wheel attitude to the road.

Cutting one coil out will drop it but will increase its rate. Id use the spring company in sheffield that pete mentioned.
