Speedometer for a 87 SE

Post by carlp »

Hi,
Just wondered is anybody was selling a VDO speedometer for my 1987 SE? Mine works but the odometer seems to stop on a regular basis. I am in Cambridgeshire.
Thanks

Carl

I may have one from when I swapped to an electronic version. I'll have a look!

I only fitted an electronic one because I did an engine/gearbox swap that only had an electronic output signal from the 'box.

I've found the speedo from my '89MY:

I love the way that Lotus has fitted a speedo reading up to 160 MPH - really?

Maybe same speedo as Esprit Turbo?

I’ve seen 140 mph on mine, so it's not so far off.

Anyhow, when my speedo broke I bought one off eBay, identical in every way except it was out of a TVR, which maxed out at 150 mph (ticks only), and the last digits are 140 mph. I prefer it because the needle rises faster, making you feel you're going quicker. ... and checked against a GPS, it's accurate. :D

My tach is from a TVR cos it has a switch on the back that can set it for 8 cylinders. Good old Ollie.

I love TVRs, me! :D

I would have owned one by now if not for the chassis design. Should've got Ollie to put in a Lotus backbone in them Tasmins! 8)

AS for instruments, they are usually designed so that normal is center of range. In top gear many tach/speedo combinations rise in unison. Top speed is not any more important than top revs.

..it's the out-riggers that are the deal-breaker for me (rust traps). :(

I've got one of each and the outriggers are crumbling away on the TVR! :(. Another resto waiting!

The +2 had side sills, and the M100 had significant outer members.

I mean, it is still a backbone as most TVRS have been AFAIK

The chassis/frame on my M100 was very rusty. Painted not galvanised. The hoods leak unless they are well maintained soaking the carpet rotting the outriggers/ sills.
Cheers, Phil
